Wine & Food

Stories we're featuring in this issue:

Jump onboard the QM2 -- at least vicariously -- with this issue's Sommelier Pick: Jean Sebastian Richer. His interview answers include our new favorite phrase: "on a Riesling tangent."

Our romance with summer tomatoes doesn't stop at this issue's Quick Entertaining -- we're going back to one of our very first Wine Skinny Cooks features (with a few updates). Yes, we just go tomato crazy in summer!

For this issue's Soup to Nuts!, we've raided the grocery store shelves for shortbread. It's one of our favorite cookies -- perfect to go with that afternoon cup of coffee that sees us through the rest of the day. And although we love homemade shortbread best, let's face facts -- we don't always have the time to play Betty Crocker. Find out which ones were our favorites!

The Matchmaker offers pairing ideas for our readers, including matching an array of wines with appetizers!

Picks & Nibbles is our catch-all, grab bag, random thoughts column where we will offer brief comment on wines, foods, restaurants -- whatever -- that get our attention. Enjoy!

Be sure to check our Wine Skinny Marketplace for a kaboodle of wine and gourmet goodies!

Finally - it's that time of year when a weekend by the pool is all that's on the schedule. Well, that and some tasty eats that can be easily adapted to feed a crowd. For this issue's Party Planning, simply mix up a big batch of coleslaw the day before - the flavors improve overnight! - as well as several batches of the Corn Prosciutto biscuits. Then it's just a question of quickly boiling shrimp in their shells for a delicious feast. Oh, and don't forget to top things off with summery strawberry sundaes!

From the first day of summer, to July 4th, to parties by the pool -- it's time to stock up on summer entertaining essentials, like the handpicked favorites in this issues Wine & Food Links!

Of the many reasons to look forward to summer, flavorful heirloom and vine-ripened tomatoes may be at the top of our list. A completely different beast than those insipid, hard bland things that appear in the markets off-season, a perfectly ripe tomato smells and tastes like summer itself. Here are a few of our favorite Quick Entertaining ideas for summer tomatoes!

A recent stay in Georgetown provided some fun wandering time - perhaps what life as a local might be like… Complete with borrowed brownstone (including the owner's golden retriever) and a slew of choices within walking distance. But for one visit to the Mall, this was not a sightseeing trip. Just a little dabbling in the neighborhood scene. Read more in Wine & Travel!
