German-born
Wolf Blass arrived in Australia's Barossa
Valley in 1961, and by 1966 had established
his own vineyard named Bilyara, an Aboriginal
name for "eaglehawk". He won acclaim
with his first solo vintage and went on
to help remake the Australian wine industry
with new winemaking techniques and export
marketing. Today Wolf Blass is a name known
internationally as one of the leaders in
Australian wine and winemaking.
The winery produces a wide range of wines
at various price levels. We recently tasted
three very different whites from Wolf Blass
- all priced at under $15. Here are our
notes:
($14).
Lovely floral and citrus aromas and flavors,
along with elegant peach, cream and mineral
notes. Ready to drink now. Outstanding with
Thai curries with plenty of spice.
($14). Starts with some ripe fruit flavors,
but soon gives way to loads of super-toasty
oak that almost has a burnt-toffee character.
($11). Heck of a deal on
a well-structured bubbly. Appealing acidic
backbone supports fresh, light citrus fruit,
with touches of creamy vanilla and juicy
apple. Ready to drink now.

This now-fabulously-named column used to
be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines,
for reasons that we cannot currently remember
but were surely enthusiastic about at the
time. Anyhoo, check out our Past
Issue Index for more great value-priced
wine selections!
