Past Issues: Bargain Wine, dec04/jan05 -- Mirassou

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- under $15 bucks, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it at editor@wineskinny.com

The Mirassou family has been growing grapes and making wine in California since 1854, making it one of America's oldest winemaking families. The winery was recently added to the Gallo portfolio of family wineries, with the sixth generation of Mirassous still intimately involved.

2004 marks the family's 150th anniversary in California winemaking, and we're marking the occasion by spotlighting the tremendous values these wines represent in our Bargain Wine spotlight!

Mirassou 2003 Chardonnay Central Coast ($11). Lots of oak to be sure, but still offers a nice fresh character, including juicy apple and peach and lemon zest flavors. Finishes with a creamy vanilla note. Serve well chilled. Ready to drink now.

Mirassou 2003 Pinot Noir Central Coast ($11). Delicate spicy cherry aromas and flavors, with a dose of fresh raspberry mid-palate. Stays focused and delicate, instead of going candied or bitter like many at this price point. Ready to drink now.

Mirassou 2001 Merlot California ($11). Sweet red cherry, vanilla and floral aromas and flavors. Simple but tasty. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 07/04)

Mirassou 2001 Cabernet Sauvignon California ($11). Smooth and medium-bodied, with easy drinking black cherry and chocolate flavors accented with herb and smoke notes. Ready to drink now. (Richard's Picks, 04/04)

This now-fabulously-named column used to be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines, for reasons that we cannot currently remember but were surely enthusiastic about at the time. Anyhoo, check out our Past Issue Index for more great value-priced wine selections!
