Past Issues: Bargain Wine, dec07/jan08 --
Affordable Whites for the Holidays

In this regular feature, we spotlight those wines that offer great bang for the buck -- $15 and under, to be exact. Here you'll find our everyday wines, house pours, and occasionally a great new find. Have a favorite Bargain Wine? Tell us about it

Last issue, we offered up a slew of bargain-priced reds that fit the bill for holiday crowds. This month, we move to the whites! Here are ten tasty little numbers that will keep your guests happy into the wee hours:

Adler Fels 2006 Gewurztraminer Russian River Valley ($15). Really lovely - and a heck of a deal at this price. With smooth, vibrant peach accented with bright citrus, rose petal and a touch of marzipan. Works really well with an array of pre-dinner appetizers. Ready to drink now.

Adler Fels 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Russian River Valley ($15). Juicy melon and nectarine flavors are accented with touches of pineapple, Meyer lemon and mineral. Stays bright through the clean finish. Ready to drink now.

Dancing Bull 2006 Sauvignon Blanc California ($12). Good choice for everyday Sauvignon Blanc, with its moderate but fresh tangerine, pineapple and crisp apple fruit flavors and aromas that pick up a touch of spice on the juicy finish. Ready to drink now.

(oops) 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Colchagua ($12). All citrusy and sharp, with grapefruit, lime and citrus zest picking up a kick of pepper on the fresh finish. Ready to drink now.

Simi 2006 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County ($15). Fresh and lemony, with crisp citrus and clean, grassy notes adding to the medium-bodied fig and topical flavors. A delicious, versatile, everyday white. Ready to drink now. (Winery Spotlight 10/07) .

TAZ Vineyards 2006 Pinot Gris Santa Barbara County ($15). A lithe balance of fresh citrus and tropical melon aromas and flavors, finishing with touches of baking spices and toasted vanilla. Ready to drink now. (Wine Skinny Cooks 10/07)

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2006 Pinot Gris Willamette Valley ($16). Pretty nectarine, fig and melon flavors are edged with appealing mineral and orange citrus notes. Finishes with just a touch of toasty vanilla. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 09/07)

Chateau St. Jean 2006 Chardonnay Sonoma County ($14). Buttered popcorn aromas and flavors accent rich pear and pineapple fruit, with a long, creamy finish. Ready to drink now.

Grant Burge 2006 Chardonnay Barossa Barossa Vines ($15). An unoaked Chardonnay, so it's not overly heavy, with moderate melon and apple fruit accented with touches of cream and pineapple. Ready to drink now.

Penfolds 2006 Chardonnay South Australia Koonunga Hill ($11). A really nice deal on a tasty wine, with appealing nectarine, citrus, vanilla and kick of spice that come together on a fresh, medium-bodied finish. Ready to drink now. (Weekend Wine 11/07)

This now-fabulously-named column used to be called Easy To Find One Figure Wines, for reasons that we cannot currently remember but were surely enthusiastic about at the time. Anyhoo, check out our Past Issue Index for more great value-priced wine selections!
