Past Issues: ETFOFW (Easy to Find One Figure Wines), apr/may 2001

A Rosemount by any other name

One of the most handsome, charming, and kind fellows I’ve ever met was a police officer from Adelaide, South Australia. He taught me a few things that I’ve kept with me over the ensuing years, such as don’t leave your parking garage ticket in your car, take it with you, and, perhaps more importantly, he and his dreamy blue eyes convinced me that Australia produces some of the best wine in the world.

Apparently foxy blue-eyed Aussie cop has been making the rounds, because of all the ETFOFW suggestions I receive, Australian wines lead the pack. And one Australian winery, in particular, Rosemount, is routinely recommended for its remarkable and remarkably priced wines.

This issue’s ETFOFWs all hale from Rosemount’s Diamond Blended series and all are priced at $7. Seven dollars for wines this good! Remarkable, indeed.

Now is the point when a more obvious and clichéd type person would say something like "so, throw another shrimp on the barbie, crack the cork, and let’s get the wobbly boot on." Or something to that effect. But Buckley’s that will happen because I’m no dag. I’m the dinki-di, as are these ETFOFWs. Go on, give ‘em a burl.

Okay, I’m done now. Until next time...

2000 Diamond Shiraz Cabernet ($7). The Rosemount Shiraz Cabernet is a consistently tasty blend. The plummy, black currant, and spicy characteristics of the shiraz meld with the black cherry and berry fruit of the cab to create a particularly juicy wine. Beautiful color. This would be great with barbeque – thrown on the barbie or otherwise.

2000 Diamond Semillon-Chardonnay ($7). This is a great blend -- the fresh floral element of the Semillon balances the traditional richness of the Chardonnay to create a lush and easy drinking wine. Good citrus fruit and little to no oak make this perfect for spring sipping. Wonderful on its own as an aperitif. Or try it with dishes like Chinese chicken salad, oysters on the half shell, or sushi.

2000 Diamond Traminer Riesling ($7). The Traminer Riesling blends the spicy, fruity fullness of Gewürztraminer with the light florals and peach of the Riesling. Try this chilled wine as an aperitif or with spicy Thai.
