August/September 2008

Past Issues: ETFOFW (Easy to Find One Figure Wines), aug/sep 2002 - Sauvignon Blancs

In this issue, we present several outstanding values on Sauvignon Blanc. This crisp, refreshing wine is perfect for the hot days of summer. It works well during the cocktail hour and pairs wonderfully with all sorts of salty, nibbly snacks and light appetizers. It’s also a great partner for foods like cold boiled shrimp, fried chicken, and bountiful summer salads.

We’ve tasted a bunch – here are our favorites:

AUSTRALIA

Angove's 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Australia Classic Reserve ($7). We tasted this in San Francisco and really liked it. It is just bursting with refreshing citrus and kiwi fruit, with appealing herbal grassy notes. Clean and bright. Not a spot of oak to be found. Pure fruit goodness. Ready to drink now.

Lindemans 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Eastern Australia Bin 95 ($8). Easy-going, with clean pear, melon, and citrus fruit along with simple grassy notes. Ready to drink now.

Oxford Landing 2001 Sauvignon Blanc South Australia ($8). Lively mix of juicy lime and smooth pear, with subtle but complex earth and grass notes. Ready to drink now.

CALIFORNIA

Canyon Road 2001 Sauvignon Blanc California ($9). Pure, focused fruit character includes juicy citrus and passion fruit, with subtle mineral and fresh clover. Stays clean throughout. Ready to drink now.

Fetzer 2001 Sauvignon Blanc California Echo Ridge ($8). Fresh and aromatic, with flavor notes that include key lime and juicy apple. Grass and just a slight touch of mint polish things off. Ready to drink now.

R.H. Phillips 2001 Sauvignon Blanc Dunnigan Hills ($8). Steely clean and fresh, set off by ripe tropical fruit and crisp, juicy apple. Stays crisp and refreshing through to the finish. Ready to drink now.
