Wine Review Archives: Italy: Grappa

Alexander

Grappa ($28). Sweet floral and vanilla aromas introduce a lively, fresh Grappa that starts out dry, tart and concentrated and ends with a definite vanilla and raisin sweetness. (Italian Connection 06/04)

Grappa di Cabernet ($31). Made exclusively from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet France, this Grapps offers a musky, sexy character. Definite red berry aromas and flavors are laced with wet hay and pungent earth. Compelling and unique. (Italian Connection 06/04)

Grappolo ($65, 375 ml; $84, 750 ml). Complex fruity aromas include green banana, pear and apple. Rich and pretty, with an elegance and a measured, balanced quality. Textbook example of Grappa's essential grapey character. 100% Prosecco. Very good. (Italian Connection 06/04)

Grappa Platinum ($45). Good Lord, this is wicked stuff. Distinct raisiny aromas introduce racy cherry fruit flavors and roasted hazelnut notes. Those brave enough to drink it straight will experience an impressively lingering burn. Better idea: serve this one on the rocks, maybe even with a splash of soda. (Italian Connection 06/04)
