Wine Review Archive - Italy, Sicily - White

Calatrasi 2000 Catarratto Sicilia Terrale ($7). And now for something completely different… This soft, young white wine is uniquely Sicilian and well worth sampling. White stone fruit, wildflower honey, and mineral notes combine in this fresh, fruity wine. Slightly green in color and character. Ready to drink now. (ETFOFW, 06/02)

Cusumano

2006 Insolia Sicilia ($14). Insolia is another indigenous Sicily grape, and this one offers some of the body and palate weight of a Chardonnay with the aromatic intensity of a Sauvignon Blanc. Crisp apple, ripe tropical citrus, maybe a hint of fig, and a dash of mineral combine nicely, with a long, fruity finish. Ready to drink now. (Italian Connection 04/08) Locate this wine online or in your area.

2006 Insolia-Chardonnay Sicilia Angimbé ($14). Here, 30% Chardonnay is blended in, and the result is even more body and richness, with crisp apple and stonefruit leading the way, and cream and citrus zest accenting the full finish. Ready to drink now. Great deal! (Italian Connection 04/08) Locate this wine online or in your area.

Planeta

2006 Sicilia La Segreta Bianco ($16). Easy to like, with bright, aromatic lemon, lime, cream, peach and apple notes that mingle on the full-bodied but fresh finish. A lot of wine for the money! Ready to drink now. A blend of Grecanico, Chardonnay, Viognier and Fiano. (Italian Connection 12/07)

2005 Sicilia Cometa ($39). Concentrated tropical aromas and flavors - melon, pineapple, lime - are smooth and polished, picking up delicate herbal notes on the elegant finish. Ready to drink now. 100% Fiano. (Italian Connection 12/07)

2005 Chardonnay Sicilia ($39). Deep, golden yellow in color, with rich, ripe pear, nectarine and tropical citrus that are structured and layered with wildflower honey, mineral and toasty vanilla. Never goes over the top; really lovely from beginning to lingering finish. Ready to drink now and over the next couple of years. (Italian Connection 12/07)
